Is There a Next Incarnation of Harry Potter?

Everybody knows that Harry Potter has been one of the hottest properties around the globe since the first book about the boy wizard debuted in 1997 and the long-awaited first movie in 2001. And now it all comes to an abrupt end? Unlikely.

The opening weekend of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” garnered a whopping $169,000,000 at the box office. That isn’t exactly chump change; it’s obviously a mega hit among summer’s blockbusters.

Regardless J.K. Rowling declared she was finished with Harry and moving on after penning the last tome in the series, fans are too enamored to easily let Harry go, or let Ms. Rowling off the hook. Let’s remember that over a century ago, Arthur Conan Doyle, similarly tired of writing ongoing serialized tales about Sherlock Holmes, tried to kill off the revered detective only to bring him back due to an incessant public thirst for more. So stay tuned.

In the meantime, new books or not, plenty of moviemakers, digital gamesters and licensees are likely to get inventive with the hot property. And even likelier to push the boundaries and Harry’s story forward in some manner. Whether Ms. Rowling goes along with some of these ideas or not, remains to be seen. She is very protective of her wonderful property, as she should be.

There can be no doubt about one thing, though: Harry will not be allowed to – poof! – disappear into thin air any time soon.

  • What do you think will happen as the Harry Potter books and movies have concluded (at least for the time being?)
  • Will Ms. Rowling sell the rights to her hot property in the future?
  • Will she be pressured into bringing Harry’s story forward? Or perhaps spin off the story and follow the track of other Hogwarts’ characters?
  • Do you think Ms. Rowling will abandon this altogether and write new books featuring totally new characters instead? If so, will she also forsake the “fantasy” genre?

Let’s hear the thoughts!
