Hasbro's Sustainability Goal for 2011May 18, 2011 at 4:03 PM by Ted MininniLike many consumer product companies, Hasbro has worked hard to be a good corporate citizen, focusing on strong community programs and sustainability. Having worked with them for years, I couldn’t have been more pleased than when they announced their packaging goal for 2011. Not only is Hasbro eliminating all metal ties in its packaging, the company has been reducing the plastic bags inside its packaging, removing 800,000 pounds of material from the waste stream in 2010. In addition, Hasbro currently recycles 90% of its solid waste generated in its plants in Massachusetts and Ireland. The focus for 2011 is to derive 75% of its packaging from recycled material or from sustainable forest management sources. All of this according to a Hasbro statement released to Business Wire late last fall. What’s important here is that sustainability is built into the company’s DNA: good practices are instituted in every phase of operations; product packaging is a logical extension of these practices. To help this process along and meet the company’s goals, Hasbro has created a new position: a new Director of Product and Packaging Sustainability. Wal-Mart’s Senior VP of toys, Laura Phillips: “Wal-Mart applauds Hasbro’s industry leadership position in the area of environmental sustainability, which includes its initiative to systematically reduce, and eventually replace, wire ties with sustainable and innovative materials made from paper rattan and other materials.” Takeaway: companies, large and small, can take a leadership position within their industries, become terrific corporate citizens and feel good about instituting sustainable business practices on every level.
